First of all, I'm a firm believer that when you critique something, you always say what you liked about it and what was good first, and then you bust its balls. When I first watched this the other day after searching for it (I had just been introduced to the song when a clip of APEX with Charlize Theron showed up on my feed), my first thought was, "what the fuck". It's no surprise it's directed by a Frenchman. Just watch it and tell me what other possible manner of Human Being could be responsible. I wonder what a German thinks of this. No matter, in all it's very "Euro" without being trashy. I watched it several times in order to study it and determine if it was worthy of my comments and this is what I determined.
You'll notice a smirk on many of the Grrls' faces at different moments. This is obviously them trying to contain their laughter.
At least one of the Grrls contacted her agent and asked, "How much am I making for doing this gig again?"
There is also heavy lipstick kink going on with this shot and I believe the Woman in front is Magali Lange whose Instagram describes her as an 'Artist'. She'd make a hell of a Squirrel Grrl with those flashing red lips though! IYKYK...RIGHT?
Now all the voices out there are commenting about the 'BRUTALIST' look to the piece and I can see that but to me the architecture isn't quite the same brutalist look common to parts of Europe especially eastern Europe. Too many curves and too much color. Brutalism to me is more grey and sharp with their lines. This, whatever it is, makes me think more of a post modern art deco metropolis by Fritz Lang if he were to smoke some dope, tone it down a bit and make a music video without almost drowning a half dozen background performers.
