It seems the American Western as an accepted genre is being reinvented. The western, a staple of entertainment in America for decades, had all but disappeared from the big screen and TV in the 80s only to be resuscitated in the 90s and percolate quietly for the next generation with a quality production here and there. Now obviously there were several great film productions but TV wise...not much.
I'm talking the hit western, the show that the American TV audience in preponderance could say, "I saw that. It was good." I myself seldom realized how much I liked the genre. People would ask me, "Oh great One, Master of all that is virtuous, what is your favorite show?" and I seldom thought of a western but one day while immersed in introspective contemplation, I realized suddenly
how much I really liked the genre. I mean if you are Genration X and especially if you are a Boomer, you were raised on this shit. Gunsmoke, High Chapparal, Bonanza, Wagon Train, The Wild Wild West and even F-Troop for fucks sake. (Imagine a film release of F-Troop starring Will Farrel. That would be HIGHlarious.) In reality, the Western in America can never die as the genre itself is so uniquely American. Only Australia can compete with any sort of culture similar in nature. So it's good to be able to go to our streaming services and be entertained with the spectacle of Indian raids, douchebag gun fighters, prospectors, settlers, blue-coated cavalry with their yellow scarves and dusty Stetsons rolling up in their column of twos like Outlaw Bikers, well maybe not quite like that but any sort of group of riders in disciplined column of twos is cool if you are into that shit.
Horizon and American Primeval serve up a tasty spectacle of the old west with American Primeval being the rare antebellum story (that means pre-American Civil War for all you uneducated dipshits. Jesus Christ go learn something). Both are strong in modern production values, directing, and acting. It's hard to pick which is the better and in doing so, it would not mean the other any less worthy of your time. If you enjoy the genre watch both. You will probably see more written about AP than Horizon. Horizon is old news that didn't perform well at the Box Office but the truth of the matter is, that the manner in which the consumer views modern cinema, the Box Office is quickly becoming a false statistic when it comes to considering the quality of the piece. Large film companies lament two weeks of box office revenue that doesn't cover the cost of their production when all who know know that those fucking bastards got 95 years to make their money back. Besides word on the street is that no film ever makes a profit (*wink* wink*). Makes a homie wonder how all these fuckers get paid the amount of coin, they get paid and can afford Mansions in the Hollywood Hills and several other corners of the World.
If you research you'll read apologists for the Church of LSD (no not the drug, we are talking the religious cult) belly-aching that American Primeval is historically inaccurate and seeks to lay blemish upon the Church of the LSD as the story depicts and unfolds around an atrocity committed by the Mormon Militia upon a wagon train of over 100 settlers which although not portrayed historically accurate in the show, never the less occurred at the hands of Mormon soldiers who tried to put the blame on First Nation People.
If you ask me which is better and I'm forced to pick, if there were no other choice but to pick, if my Life depended on my picking, I would choose Horizon. Why? Although acted equally well, it had more recognizable cast to include Kostner himself, but ultimately, I think the Apache attack was more gritty without being gratuitous and had more imagination than the Mormon attack on the wagon train, in American Priveaval. It harkened me back to when I watched Hostiles with Christian Bale and thought that this was the first really valid depiction of First Nations People attacking whites that was visceral and real.
